The Blind Leading The Blind

Arsene Wenger of Arsenal looks on as a fan behind makes his feelings known during the Barclays Premier League match between Arsenal and Aston Villa at Emirates Stadium on August 17, 2013 in London, England

So yet another season has commenced and to many Arsenal Fans it will already feel like many others, a raft of outgoings and only one incoming player and that being the free transfer of an Injury prone French Under 21 International who Ligue 2 outfit Auxerre did not want, all the while Man City, Tottenham, Chelsea and Liverpool to name just a few have all strengthened. Arsenal are the only club in the Premier League not to spend any money. Even opening day gave off a little bit of deja vu. A massive lack of unity within the club showed massively on the pitch. Disjointed and unprofessional. There are many words you could throw about that performance just find your nearest Thesaurus and look up abysmal and see where that leads you.

Many Arsenal fans are already fearing the worst with Fulham away next in the premier league sandwiched between two massive Champions League qualification games against Fenerbahce. Such a depleted squad already, As I have said before the writing is clearly on the wall for Wenger. People like to throw around the phrase “They are too good to go down” I have never put much faith in that. Arsene Wenger has had a lot of love from the media in recent years but Paul Lambert has shown him up to be a fraud when it comes to youth development. A lot of people mocked Lambert last season when he dropped the old guard and selected players from their academy or young acquired players bought for next to nothing, apart from Benteke. It took him one year to get them playing with unity and desire, they are NOT a team of superstars they are a TEAM something that Arsenal are not and have not been since they last won the League. Arsene Wenger seems to have been in transition for the past decade. There is only so much time you can give one manager. He is now the longest serving Manager in the Premier League but you can bet he would not be if he was at the helm of any other club in world football.

There is clearly a divide between Wenger and the board and you would think it is only a matter of time til the ignorant patience of some board members grind their axe. The biggest fear for the fans would now be is it too late? with the deadline now getting ever closer, the club only have until the 2nd September I am not sure you could get another manager in and get business done so it looks like the club will be stuck with Wenger at least until his contract expires next summer unless they cast him out in January. It now looks like Ivan Gazidis will have to step in for the third season in a row to identify and complete deals like he has done with some of the key players the club has bought in previous seasons. Arteta, Mertesacker, Cazorla, Monreal. I understand these were all Gazidis and they were all key. A lot of fans level the “What do you actually do” at Gazidis well it would appear he contributes a darn sight more to the club than Wenger does these days. After speaking to a few Arsenal fans yesterday you can feel the resignation to this season already just after one game. Every true fan saw it on the horizon it would seem to (quote the article title) it is a case of the blind leading the blind.
