A change of focus? or just the same ol’ Arsenal

Arsenal's French manager Arsene Wenger watches from the touchlines during the UEFA Champions League round of 16 football match between Arsenal and Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium in north London on February 19, 2013. Bayern Munich won 3-1

I am up with Arsene Wenger‘s most ardent critics, there are a lot of mixed opinions regarding his “leadership” more than ever this season. I have to say I think maybe the penny has dropped and he may have finally realised things need to change. He is saying the right things if reports are to be believed he has been telling players they are “fighting for their Arsenal careers”. He only recently tinkered with his chosen system. shoring it up with a more of a 4-2-3-1 setup which is working defensively. I’m sure most people would have to credit him with finally dropping calamitous Szczesny and the under performing Vermaelen it was needed and has given us more of a fresh look defensively. Although I am still no supporter of Le Boss this season he does have to be given credit for our recent change in form. However, this just parallels last season in so many ways.

If there has been a real change of focus this will be seen in the summer in the transfer market. If reports are to be believed a clear out is on the cards. Sagna is expected to be top of PSG’s list a £8 million bid is being mooted. the likes of Arshavin and Gervinho have been linked with several clubs as has Vermaelen and not forgetting the seemingly out of favour Podolski. If this is the case we are going to need at least 8 new signings. We have literally no squad depth, with only one recognised centre forward at the club all season that just is not good enough. Wenger was quoted this season as saying he feels his squad is big enough to challenge and that he has 2 players for every position, not sure how that is the case.

We definitely need a new number one with the out of form Szczesny’s future in major doubt at the club and I’m not sure how long Fabianski’s form will last. a replacement for the seemingly moving ever closer departure of Sagna. we are also short at the back Centrally with only 3 recognisable Centre backs I would personally be looking at the likes of Mo Sakho who can play anywhere along the back four. maybe Micah Richards who seems to have been frozen out at Man City. Centre Midfield we are still short of a solid Defensive Midfielder that has been a problem for seasons now, didnt think we would have missed Alex Song as much as we have this season, just shows how under valued he was at the club. I would have to say really like Matuidi but very much doubt he would leave PSG, there is also a possibility of Dortmind’s Gundogan he is also impressive and is a player Wenger is very interested in. We should have nailed a deal for Sissoko he would be ideal. We are short of an out an out winger as well Podolski, Cazorla and Oxlade-Chamberlain have played well or be it playing slightly out of position think all these 3 are more comfortable playing centrally. last but not least Upfront other than Olivier Giroud we have nothing there, there has been games where he has looked very leggy and needed a rest but we have no-one adequate to bring in to the fold. I would not be surprised to see Stevan Jovetic at the emirates in the summer.
