Gunners run out of fire

Arsene Wenger

Firstly I would like to apologise for being quiet, just started an internship so I’m just balancing out enough to start writing my own stuff again.

Well it wasn’t the best of weekends for Arsenal, in fact it was probably the worst in a while. It all started on Friday when Wenger made that stupid comment in his press conference

“I hope I get the praise that I deserve, I’m doing the best job I can”

This comment is ludicrous, he has had praise for all his previous achievements and he still has followers that praise him for that now but he doesn’t deserve any praise right at this moment in time, we can’t praise a man who isn’t doing anything to be praised for. If this is the best that he can do then Wenger has lost it or is openly lying, we all know he can do better but he just doesn’t want to because that would involve him admitting he was wrong, a change of philosophy again and spending money, 3 things we know he would never want to admit to.

When Saturday came it got a lot worse as I sat there and watch the game unravel into a big sloppy frustrating mess. I can’t believe how bad we played on Saturday, outclassed by yet another lower league team. My biggest issue seems to be the most discussed issue and that was team selection. We had a more of a shot at winning the FA cup than we do the Champion’s league so the logical option would be to risk it and field a strong team for the FA cup tie like all of the other top clubs did. Instead Wenger still chose to leave out a few key players, and even though you can use the excuse that the team should have still beat Blackburn it was not a game to risk that given our form this season.

There were no excuse for the way we played on Saturday and both the players and Le Boss are to blame. Wenger said in his press conference that the team lacked mental strength, Arsenal rarely lack mental strength, in fact we are always better when we are under pressure so I think that is utter garbage. We lacked on skill, pace, energy, tactics, control and confidence and most of all we lacked desire, that was the issue with the game.

The rumour mill went crazy after we got knocked out by Blackburn and I think the media are playing on the obvious divide between fans with half reporting that Wenger will leave by mutual consent/get sacked and the other half saying Wenger has been offered a new 2 year contract. I’d be shocked if either rumour was true but I don’t think they are. I think it’s lazy journalism to be honest and the fans could do with not being wound up anymore, it is adding fuel to an angry fire.

The pressure does seem to be getting to Arsene and that was made obvious by his Champion’s league press conference* this morning when he snapped at a journalist and ended up being quite awkward to interview. I think the trouble is Arsene is running out of things to say to defend him and the team and in my opinion there is no defence (and none in the team either)

This has been a tough season for Arsenal fans and sadly it seems we are all dividing in our opinion which is sad because we all want the same thing just different opinions on how to get it. I think the club are letting this get out of hand, when fans are dividing and fighting it doesn’t matter who is right or wrong it matters that it is happening-and if fans are fighting it definitely means something at the club is wrong so the board need to wake up and do something about this situation in the summer.

We have been knocked out by Bradford and Blackburn and after Saturday’s game my optimism for beating Bayern Munich is dwindling. Our bad luck seems to come in B’s this season. The two B’s we have faced so far have outplayed us and the third B have a real chance of eliminating us. I think it might be another repeat of last year’s AC Milan fiasco but you never know which Arsenal will turn up on the night, I hope it’s the Arsenal that remember how to play.

Would love for you to comment but please refrain from being abusive.

Is One Really Enough?

 (AFP -ImagebankIL)

As I made myself comfortable in front of Skysports news for the final knock ins of transfer deadline day. I have to admit I succumbed to bitter resignation of us doing any business. confounded by the fact that there were no reporters at the Emirates or outside London Colney. Could we possibly not be looking at anyone. There had been several outlandish rumours doing the rounds. David Villa, Edinson Cavani, Maarten Stekelenburg, Bastian Schweinsteiger, to name just a few. None of these coveted in any kind of realism.

Finally a story broke that we had made an enquiry for Malaga and Spain Left back Nacho Monreal (pictured). relatively unheard of on these shores, but in Spain held in very high regard. Rated as the second best left back in La Liga. the deal is to be believed to be in the region of £8.7 million signing what is reported to be  a four and a half year deal. I have seen him a few times for Malaga this season and have been impressed. He is good in the air, solid defensively but is more of a wing back than left back so expect to see him ranging down the left and he will lend very good support to the ever improving Lukasz Podolski. whether he was signed by the board or Wenger remains unanswered not sure that is hugely important at this time but we have been here before.

Will just the one signing be enough?. I have read a lot of opinions since last night regarding our transfer activity or lack of. many are very concerned and I believe with good reason. I don’t think I had ever been so concerned about us defensively than I had been during the Liverpool game on Wednesday night, we looked shambolic and inexperienced. reminded me of the way Aston Villa have defended this season. I have to say I would have loved us to have signed Chris Samba unfortunately he is now at QPR, he would have solidified our defence no question.

I would have liked us to have signed 3-4 players to be honest even if it was on a temporary basis. Our back four is a major concern would have liked at least one centre half as I have already mentioned. we are extremely short of presence in midfield. still don’t think we have anyone who can really marshal our midfield and just sit in front of the back four. Also a striker to replace Chamakh who is out on loan.

In conclusion I am very happy with the signing of nacho Monreal but I also have to admit I am very disappointed with the lack of any other activity.

Feedback always welcome.

Has Wenger Lost His Marbles?

Deadline day was depressing wasn’t it, it normally is for us Gooners anyway but yesterday was disheartening. When I turned Deadline day on in the morning to see Wenger being driven away and the London Colney all shut up for the day, I must admit at that moment I really thought my predictions of no signings was going to be true and if Kieron Gibbs hadn’t got injured on Wednesday night then I have a sneaky suspicion that I might have been right.

I don’t even think the signing of Monreal was enough to convince even the most positive of Arsenal fan’s that we were aiming to get 4th place. It was rumoured that it was another board enforced buy very much like the signings of Arteta and Mertesacker but nonetheless it was a necessary but great signing for Arsenal. We were absolutely desperate for a left-back, Gibbs is brilliant but is injury prone and still needs experience and we all know how rubbish Santos has been lately. I don’t know much about Monreal I have to admit but after listening to a few football people and reading up it sounds like he is a decent player.

As most of you know I lost my belief and respect for Wenger when he sat back and let RVP leave to go United in the summer and as the situation worsens at Arsenal I am wondering how long we can continue with this man in charge? Everything is suffering and the board are not to blame for all of it. Wenger is to blame for a lot.

I am between two theories here, my first is that I am seriously wondering whether Arsene is trying to get sacked. It would make sense, he never leaves before a contract runs out (something that stretches to players now too), his management technique has increasingly worsened over the years as has his choice of players, tactics, substitutions, and transfers. He doesn’t seem happy there since the season of The Invincibles, and I wonder if it is because he achieved so much in a short amount of time that it left him and us as fans with huge expectation and he hasn’t been able to live up to it. How does a man achieve all of that and fail on such epic proportions.

My other theory is that Wenger has really lost his marbles, he been so caught up on the financial planning of the club that he has forgotten that there is a football that is in desperate need of shaping up. I truly think he can’t see that there is anything wrong especially when he makes the statements he has recently such as “this team we have now care more than the likes of Adams and Henry” and ” I believe that this is the strongest team we have ever had”. Those statements are not only insulting to the players from the past but it is insulting to the fans, ex-players and anyone else around who can simply see this is not true.

How can so many of us see it and the minority of fans and Wenger can’t? We have seen Ex-players, pundits, real football people who can see all the issues with Arsenal that need to be sorted. Le Grove had made some very valuable points on this subject also and it is really worth checking out his article today**

Amongst us writers and bloggers we have all had similar opinions over the last few weeks and at the start of the season it wasn’t all that way, in fact we were split on our opinions. More and more people are coming round to the fact that this season is going to be a write off and we face losing out on Champion’s league football and that isn’t because of the board, it is due to Wenger’s choices over the last few months and he has no defense anymore, you can’t go from 49 games unbeaten to 8 years of a dwindling mess without somewhere acknowledging even once that it is his fault.  Stop with the delusions of grandeur Arsene and either leave or man-up and do your job!
